A Rhinoplasty can create a stunningly beautifully shaped nose:
A Rhinoplasty result like the one above requires a great deal of skill, experience, and finesse on the part of your plastic surgeon. (Contact Dr Seckel)
People who seek Rhinoplasty usually want to achieve one or more of the following:
- A smaller nose
- Removal of a nose bump or hump on the nose
- A smaller nose tip or more refined tip of the nose
- A narrower nose and tip
- A nose lift or elevation of a hanging tip of the nose
- Correction of a crooked nose
- Correction of a hanging tip that pulls down when smiling
- A different nose from that of your mother or father
Rhinoplasty is one of my favorite plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty is challenging and requires that the surgeon have a great deal of experience, skill and finesse to achieve the best result.
Most importantly you and I need to share your vision of how you want your nose to look. I do not use computer morphing pictures because they are unrealistic and give you a false vision or “painted image” of your final result.
I take photographs of your nose, print them, and make drawings that much more accurately show you what your nose will look like after a Rhinoplasty. I also have you bring photos of models in magazines who have the nose you want. This helps me understand the image that you hope to achieve. Result oriented Rhinoplasty requires that we have a shared image of your goal.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
If you only want the bump or hump removed from your nose I do a closed Rhinoplasty which means the incision is placed inside the nose. If however, you want a refined nasal tip I do an open Rhinoplasty. The Open Rhinoplasty requires a small incision under the tip, above your lip. The incision is not visible unless you lift your head and look for it. No one will be able to see your incision unless you lift up your head and show them.
Both types of Rhinoplasty are done as outpatient procedures which means that you will go home the same day as your surgery.
The open Rhinoplasty has revolutionized the Rhinoplasty procedure and has enabled me to create beautiful aquiline nasal tips that cannot be achieved with the closed Rhinoplasty.
When we meet for your consultation we will talk about how you want to change your nose and what result you want to achieve. I will examine you and tell you what I think about the possibility of achieving the result that you want to achieve. I will show you photos of results of other patients. I will also take your photos, print them, and draw the changes that I believe I can achieve. I will also answer your questions. You will be given a quote of the cost of the Rhinoplasty procedure. Financing plans are available.
The pre operative visit is the time when we will sit down and clearly define your goals. You will bring photos of faces that have the nose you desire and we will also go over your photos. I will tell you what I can achieve and cannot achieve and try to give you an honest image of what you can expect for a result.
You will also undergo a history and physical exam to make certain that you are healthy and have no medication allergies or contraindications to surgery. An EKG (electrocardiogram) may be done if you have a history of heart problems or have reached a certain age. You will also be given prescriptions for post operative medications. You also will be asked to read and sign surgical consent forms which outline the risks, potential complications, limitations and expectations of Rhinoplasty surgery.
A closed Rhinoplasty takes me an hour or less. An open Rhinoplasty is more complex and can take up to 2 hours.
You are asleep during the surgery. I have very experienced superb anesthesiologists who will be taking care of you. Safety is our first concern. We use modern, very safe anesthesiology techniques, and take precautions to avoid nausea after surgery.
Following your surgery you will go to the recovery room where a nurse will take care of you and make sure you are comfortable. As soon as you are comfortable, able to drink and eat a bland food such as crackers or cookies, and able to go to the bathroom, you will be discharged. The nurse will escort you by wheel chair to your car.
We require that someone bring you to the surgery center and take you home, and that you have someone staying with you the first night after your surgery.
Post op- What to expect
You will have a splint taped onto your nose after surgery. I do not use nasal packs inside the nose. My patients rarely complain of pain after Rhinoplasty. Your main discomfort will be that you cannot breathe through your nose right after surgery. This is due to the splint and swelling of the nose.
The area around your nose and eyes will be swollen, and bruising can occur. I will recommend that you take an herbal product called Arnica
By day 10 to 12 your splint will be removed and you will see a significant result immediately. However your final result will take months to appreciate because swelling, especially in the tip, takes time to go away.
I use a very specific post operative mineral make up to cover the bruising, if any, around your eyes for the first 2-3 weeks.
After the splint comes off at 10 to 12 days you will be comfortable going out and being seen socially with make up covering any bruising on your eyes.
