Liposuction-Liposculpture

On a properly selected patient liposuction can remove fat and improve body contour:

Liposuction Before and After

Liposuction can create very nice results but patient selection and technical expertise using small cannulae to avoid skin depressions is crucial. (Contact Dr Seckel)

In my practice the most common patients seeking Liposuction are:

  • Men and Women who want to remove their “double chin”
  • Women who want a flatter tummy
  • Women who want leaner hips and thighs
  • Men who want to remove the “spare tire” around the waist
  • Men who want to remove breast fat or gynecomastia

Liposuction or Liposculpture is an excellent method for removing small to moderate amounts of deep fat from the neck, abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, and male breasts in otherwise fit people. Liposuction or Liposculpture is NOT a solution for obesity and doing Liposuction or Liposculpture on overweight people with large amounts of fat is not safe and usually results in loose skin and unacceptable results.

The Liposuction or Liposculpture Procedure

Most people seeking Liposuction or Liposculpture are people who have a specific area of their body that has excess fat but are otherwise not obese. For women the double chin, the hips and thighs, and the tummy are the most frequent areas. For men, it is the double chin, the breasts, and the “spare tire”.

A good Liposuction or Liposculpture result requires that the skin of the area from which the fat is removed tighten after the fat is removed, if it does not then loose skin after liposuction can be a problem. Skin tightening is usually sufficient to produce a pleasing result if the skin has good elasticity, that is if the skin snaps back after it is pulled and released, and if too much fat is not removed.

I use small liposuction cannulae, the instrument used to suction the fat. Smaller cannulae make smaller incisions necessary. Also, fat is removed more gradually with smaller cannulae which helps avoid taking too much fat out with any one pass of the cannula, an occurrence that could create skin depressions after liposuction. These skin depressions are also called a liposuction contour deformity.

This gradual, controlled technique takes more time and effort but improves results and helps avoid depressions.

Your Consultation

When we meet I will talk with you and ask you to explain to me the specific goals you hope to achieve from Liposuction or Liposculpture. I will examine you and tell you my findings and make my recommendations.

I will discuss the procedure, your recovery, and expectations and answer your questions. Photos of the area that you want to remove fat from will be taken. You will be given an estimate or quote of the cost of the procedure. Financing plans are available.

Pre OP

The pre operative visit is the time when we will sit down and clearly define your liposuction goals. We will discuss what you hope to achieve and what I believe I can achieve with Liposuction or Liposculpture.

You will also undergo a history and physical exam to make certain that you are healthy and have no medication allergies or contraindications’ to surgery. An EKG (electrocardiogram) may be done if you have a history of heart problems or have reached a certain age. You will also be given prescriptions for post operative medications.

You also will be asked to read and sign surgical consent forms which outline the risks, potential complications, limitations and expectations of Liposuction or Liposculpture.

The Operation

Liposuction or Liposculpture is done with you asleep under general anesthesia. Very experienced, superb anesthesiologists will be taking care of you. Your safety is my first concern. We use modern, very safe anesthesiology techniques, and take precautions to avoid nausea after surgery

I use the Tumescent Liposuction or Liposculpture technique. A solution which is designed to dissolve fat and minimize bleeding is injected under pressure into the areas which are to be treated.

I use small liposuction cannulae which allow me to remove small amounts of fat at each pass, to avoid taking too much fat from one area and creating a depression in the skin.

For a good Liposuction or Liposculpture result it is important to remove deep fat and avoid the superficial fat near the skin. Removing fat too close to the skin can cause skin depressions.

The cannulae are placed through tiny liposuction incisions placed in hidden areas or areas which are less visible

Liposuction or Liposculpture is done as an outpatient or day surgery. You will go home the same day after surgery. The operation usually takes about an hour.

After you wake up you will be taken to the recovery room where a nurse will be taking care of you. The nurse monitors you, makes certain you are comfortable and checks your vital signs. You will spend 1-2 hours in recovery. After that, as soon as you are comfortable, able to drink and eat a bland food such as crackers or cookies, and able to go to the bathroom, you will be discharged. The nurse will escort you by wheel chair to your car.

We require that someone bring you to the surgery center and take you home, and that you have someone staying with you the first night after your surgery.

Post op- What to expect

In the recovery room you will be given medications to control any discomfort you are experiencing following your surgery. You also will have medications to take for discomfort at home. You will experience discomfort in the treated areas for the first 3-4 days after surgery.

Most patients are quite comfortable by day 5 post op and some are able to return to work. Generally full recovery takes 2 weeks. I ask you to wait 3 weeks before heavy weight lifting or aggressive work outs.
