Superficial Chemical Peels
Superficial peels with AHAs like Glycolic and Lactic Acid 20-30% or salicylic acid are an aesthetician service that can be applied by medical aestheticians in a doctor’s office under the supervision of a physicianand are an excellent skin care treatment. These peels provide skin exfoliation, removal of superficial pigment, and can also stimulate new collagen production.
I do not use deep peels because the risk of scarring and hypo-pigmentation (whitening of the treated skin) are too great. Most physicians today prefer laser resurfacing if a deeper peel is needed. This is a much more controllable, less risky form of facial resurfacing. Some doctors get beautiful results with the deeper peels and are more experienced than I am in their use. I have simply seen too many patients who suffered complications after another doctor has done their peel, and at that point, unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to help them.
